May Access on the Bruce Peninsula:
Halfway Dump has been closed by the Bruce National Park Authority since May 2003. It was 2002 when the first incident of aggressive boulder cleaning was discovered. This has jeopardized future access for bouldering on the Bruce Peninsula. Information regarding the circumstances of the closure are somewhat vague and we have never been learned exactly what the extent of the damage was.
"I can only hope climbers will be understanding about the time it is taking and continue to respect the closure. It is going to be harder as time goes on because each spring, a new set of climbers come out from the gyms and want to explore yet are not fully aware of the implications of their possible actions. Our proposal to re-open Halfway will rely a lot on self policing and climber education. Demonstating that the climbing community as a whole is responsible enough to follow the current rules will ultimately reflect positively on the proposal we are working on. I believe we can succesfully regain access at Halfway but it will take continued support from climbers both before and after our negotiations." -Grant Parkin, Alpine Club of Toronto Access Committee Chairman.
